I woke up pretty innocently today. It is Saturday here and the weather is turning to winter, so it is rainy and the leaves are falling from the trees. I intended to just give the house a quick once over and decided I could do with some music to make the task a little bit more enjoyable. Well, I was a little bored of my music selection, so I got onto itunes and downloaded some tracks I had heard on the radio and well….. next thing….
Picture the scene…. me in my pyjama’s dancing around the living room, duster in one hand used as my replacement microphone. I just completely let it all go. The worrying about everything, the time constraints of the day, the constant planning and thinking about the future and the past. I felt so incredibly free, just me in my living room dancing and singing into my duster :). Honestly, I know it might remind you of silly scenes from the Alley McBeal series but it is so therapeutic. I actually got goose bumps at one stage, with the music blaring, me in bare feet doing swirls on the living room carpet!
There is something quite amazing about dancing and singing at the same time. You can’t actually think about other things when you are focused on singing! I feel so light and free and energetic now! I think the best part about it is that there is no-one around to judge me. I have the whole place to myself and can completely let go of it all. I can dance how I want and don’t have to worry about how I look or how silly I might come across! It is so liberating.
It leaves you with a really positive feeling… dancing. I know you probably think I have lost the plot completely but you just have to try it! Even if you have kids to look after, it is so good they will join in! It is just so much fun!
The other thing is to pick songs that are uplifting and make you feel good. I have some favourites, like Rhiana, “Make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world!”, “Firework” by Katy Perry and then there are some old ones like “They Say it’s Gonna rain” Hazel Dean. – I just find that one just makes me feel like I can achieve anything!
There is also a new New Zealand artist “Like Water” by Ladi 6.
It is so easy these days to get good music with itunes. It was so much fun for only $10!
There are some very important things you just have to do when you dance around the living room:
- Move the tables and things out the way so you have ultimate space and room for all those swirls and turns!
- Make sure you are barefoot. It just enhances the whole feeling. They call it grounding and it honestly works!
- Hide the clocks and just let it go. Don’t worry about what you have to do. It can wait. Will the world end if you don’t do it right this minute? Probably not!
- Sing as loud as you can!
- Get your hips into it. This is really good for your pelvic area. Gets some blood flowing and opens up the chakra down there. Do those Shakira moves J
- Enjoy it and don’t worry about how you dance or how you look. Just feel the rhythm of the music and allow your whole body to delve into it.
I think we should do this as often as we can! It is so good for your whole spirit and outlook. Life becomes so serious sometimes, we forget to just play, dance and enjoy simple things.
Just let the music and life flow. Lets not take everything so seriously and simply enjoy each moment as it comes to us 🙂
Think of all that time you spend watching silly television shows or do things which give you nothing back. One or two hours of dancing will make you feel so free and uplifted for the whole day 🙂
The house still got cleaned, some dance moves thrown in for extra measure….

This is woderful 😀
I find even just a little jiggle does wonders 🙂 Glad I am not the only one who loves this!
Love it! I thought I was the only one that did that! I used to do it way more often, in fact, my mop is probably missing its waltzing partner. I really ought to give it a try again. I do love to do it, but what with the moving and the surgery, I just haven’t done in a really long time. Thanks for reminding me how much fun it is, and how much I miss it.
