How to Support the Liver: Mel’s Top 5 Recommendations

If you have been following my blog for a while or you are new to it all, let me tell you that the ticket to feeling better with endometriosis and our overall hormone health is, yip… the liver!

The liver is the organ that flushes out the excess hormones, plus all those toxins you might have accumulated along the way. So, we want to support our liver as much as possible.

1. Foods you want to avoid to improve your liver health

These are foods which place a strain on your liver. They make our poor liver work harder and increase its workload.

  • Sugar
  • Trans fats
  • Soy lecithin (yes, the one found in chocolate!)
  • Gluten and other grains
  • Even potatoes seem to make it work harder
  • Fatty foods in general. We need some good fats but make sure you are not indirectly eating foods that are fatty. The easiest way to know is if you feel nauseous after eating it.

2. Foods and Drinks that really help out the liver. (you want to eat these daily if you can!)

  • Leafy greens, especially the dark bitter stuff. That includes brussel sprouts, dandelion leaves, cilantro, mustard greens, beet leaves, kale and watercress.
  • Consume lots of lemon within your day. You can either drink lots of lemony drinks (no sugar!) or just make a salad dressing which includes lemon. Lemon with warm water first thing in the morning is a great detoxifier.
  • Daikon radish sprouts and Daikon radish tea. I recently discovered the power of this one! It dissolves fat in the body. So, if you have lipomas or any fat within the body, then this one is great. Either sprout them or get the whole vegetable, grate it and make it into a tea with a splash of tamari (gluten free soy sauce). Naturally, you can also just eat them.
  • Get onto sulfur rich foods. Foods which contain sulfur are onions, arugula and eggs. I am personally avoiding eggs right now but most cruciferous veggies also contain sulfur. Garlic is another great one.
  • Eat veggies that specifically heal the liver like artichoke hearts (get the real thing!). I know they are a real effort to make but they are super tasty and good for us. Celery is another good one and asparagus.
  • Drink healing drinks. I personally recommend the coconut kefir but you can also make a beetroot kvass or just drink home-made beetroot juice. Dandelion root or leaf tea is also fabulous for the liver.

3. The Emotional Stuff

Anger and the liver are closely connected. Make sure you release that anger from your body. Be grateful for what you have and be present in each moment. If you have built up resentments or past stuff that is still frustrating and annoying you, figure out a way to let it go or release it from your body. Emotional Freedom Technique, Forgiveness work or kinesiology may be the perfect thing for you!

4. The Herbal Stuff

I personally love taking Gold Coin Grass as a tincture along with turmeric to really help my liver out. These are fabulous at softening those gallbladder and liver stones—great if you are thinking of doing a liver flush too.

Milk thistle is also a great remedy for the liver and has been shown to actually repair a damaged liver. You need to take the milk thistle SEED and not the plant material—the leaves and flowers have estrogenic qualities.

5. My Top Supplement Recommendation

I know there are many supplements out there that can detoxify the liver and the body but for me, I am still a huge fan of the simple glutathione. This is an amino acid which helps the liver and also helps with our digestion at the same time!

I just love it and have found it makes a huge difference from when I don’t take it to when I do.

So, there you have it. Now, go out and try eating, drinking and applying all of these for two months and see how much better you feel.

Any you love that you want to add to the list? Feel free to share below in the comment…

Hi there, I also have fibromyalgia. Nausea mostly comes on mid cycle in morning but sometimes at night. How do I know if its endometriosis related ( have had endo five years ago) now have pelvic congestion syndrome or if its my fibro as nausea is a common symptom of this also.

    Hi Lulu,

If your digestion isn’t working then you will not be absorbing all the good stuff you are putting in.
I would really look at your diet – make sure you are cutting out gluten, sugar and eating the right fibre – not bran. You might be interested in my Food Healing Journey Course which can guide you through getting this back on track.
Chia seeds are fabulous and can do the same job as fish oils. If you are going to take fish oil – get Krill oil. It is far better and is less likely to contain pollutants.

I have just started to take fish oil, I am wondering what are your thoughts on that, and what can I do to help my digestion? Lot of times I feel I am not digesting properly and the herbs I take don’t sync in. Since i found about your article about Macca root and not combining with other herbal hormonal remedies.
    Thanks
    Lulu

Really? Wow that is interesting. I haven’t had any issues. Most of us are allergic to lactose rather than caseine.

    Hi Mel,

thanks for the article. I was surfing online after reading your post and came across this comment “it should be avoided in people with milk protein allergies ” Since most Endo girls have a sensitivity towards milk i wanted to ask you how it has been for you and what are the merits of this comment.
