Is Oestrogen Dominance a possible cause of Endometriosis? 4 possible links!

I have been reading heaps of books about possible causes of Endometriosis and when I look at the information, it does make sense that Oestrogen Dominance could be a definite cause. The thing that got me thinking it could be Oestrogen dominance is probably more to do with the contact of toxins and excess toxins in the body. There is a difference between good Oestrogens and bad Oestrogens.

The bad ones are called xenoestrogens and they are the ones we find in our skin care products, toothpaste, nail polish, cleaning products etc. They are also commonly called Dioxins or DDT’s which are found in our everyday environment.  I have added a heap of articles on this below.

What is interesting is that these xenoestrogens are not easily measurable in a blood test. The Xenoestrogens will add to the overall Oestrogen levels in our body, creating Oestrogen Dominance. Here is a really good article on the difficulty in proving Xenoestrogens.

So, here are my theories on why I think Oestrogen Dominance could be a cause of Endometriosis:

1. The Monkey Test

So, these scientists went out to test what effect Dioxin would have on the body. They injected several monkeys with it…. poor little ones 🙁 and most of them landed up with Endometriosis. The severity was very much linked to the amount of dioxin these monkey were injected with. Dioxin is a xenoestrogen which when it becomes elevated will cause Endometriosis to grow more rapidly.

Please read the full findings here.

2. Our symptoms

The symptoms of Oestrogen Dominance are quite obviously related to Endometriosis. You will probably recognise them. Water retention, breast tenderness, PMS, Mood swings, depression, loss of libido, heavy periods, craving for sweets and weight gain around your hips and thighs.

3. Poor liver function

Our liver doesn’t work as well as it should. We can establish this through a number of other indicators. What happens is, when the liver isn’t working as well, it is not able to flush out the excess Oestrogens from the body, regardless of how many there are. That means it stores it.

4. Poor digestion

When our digestive systems aren’t at their optimum, we feel tired and lethargic. This also relates to Oestrogen dominance. See, when we have enough roughage and expel toxins out of the body as we should, the excess Oestrogen is able to leave the body. Conditions such as Leaky Gut Syndrome, Candida and just overall poor diet will affect the ability of the body to do this. What that means is, more Oestrogen stays in the body.

So, it is a theory and on some level it does make sense. I think the biggest culprits are the toxins in the environment which ultimately cause elevated Xenoestrogens which just play havoc on the whole system. The contraceptive pill is also a xenoestrogen and will throw out natural Oestrogen levels too – by the way. Please read this article which explains it in much more detail.

Okay, so lets say this is the cause of Endometriosis. A) Can we prove it? B) What do we do about it?

Can we prove it?

Testing whether you are Oestrogen dominant can often be misleading. Our hormones fluctuate throughout the day and will vary depending on the time of month too. For instance Progesterone is more dominant in the later stages of our monthly cycle. The best way is therefore to do a saliva test, several times throughout the month to really get an accurate indicator. Blood tests are definitely not the way to go!

What do we do about it?

Here is the hard part. I don’t agree with taking a drug or hormone treatments to bring those Oestrogen levels down. Most likely your doctor will try this technique or perhaps even natural progesterone creams. On some level it does work to rectify the problem short-term. However, there are a few factors you need to look at here.

1. Your bodies fat cells

These are where the Oestrogens and Xenoestrogens are stored and they can stay there for many, many years. The more fat you have, the more space you are creating for these guys to live! So, we need to give them less space to live and reduce our fat, through exercise and diet.

2. Get the other organs to work

Sure we can focus on just reducing Oestrogen from a symptom point of view but ultimately it doesn’t solve the problem long-term. The body should be able to flush out  the extra oestrogens and xenoestrogens by itself. We therefore need to get the liver and the digestive system to work properly to enable the body to do this naturally.

3. Regulate the whole lot by stimulating the pituitary gland

By manipulating and manipulating with only one hormone, you are inevitably going to create imbalances if you continue to use that method for too long. The best way to regulate hormones is therefore to eat plants and foods which regulate the hormones for you, in a balanced and reasonable quantity. Maca Root is one of those plants. Taken on a fluctuating basis – not continuously, Maca will regulate ALL hormones and not just progesterone or oestrogen. There are many hormones involved in the body, doing all sorts of different things. We want to leave them there but stimulate the body to control the level that they are at.

4. Detoxification

DIM is an extract taken from the cruciferous vegetables which detoxifies the body of Xenoestrogens. It will flush out the excess until you can gain control over your bodies other organs for healing. DIM works differently as it works with the liver to flush out the xenoestrogens. Please read my article I wrote about DIM.

I guess for me, this is simply a theory. There are so many other factors to take into consideration and I am going to be looking at a number of other possible causes of Endometriosis over the next few months. It does add up though that Oestrogen Dominance could be a cause of Endometriosis. One thing that we must remember is that the hormone balance in the body is incredibly delicate and sensitive and each hormone responds onto another. Our history with hormone treatments, the pill and even pain relief medication is all going to have an effect on our overall hormone health.

What is also interesting though is that our Oestrogen drops dramatically when we hit menopause so by that theory, Endo should disappear when we hit Menopause BUT this doesn’t seem to always be the case…..

I would love to know your thoughts on this theory and what you have found out through your own discoveries. Have you had a saliva test and it has come back that the Oestrogen is low or high? Do you suffer these symptoms or different ones?

The greatest research and discoveries have been made by Dr John Lee. He has also written several books which explain Oestrogen Dominance and ways to overcome this. His website is: http://www.johnleemd.com/

Oh how I can relate to this post. I was able to tick YES to all the symptoms 🙁 and I was diagnosed with impaired liver function by a blood test.

Thanks for sharing. Well at least you know what to focus on! Try some DIM and MSM and you should be all fixed 🙂
