10 Amazing Benefits in One Ayurvedic Herb, Which Has Been around for 1000s of Years!

I have been exploring ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine a little more. I have been avoiding anything that is too “problem-specific” and have essentially focused on the top herbs within these forms of healing. So, the best herbs applied for all sorts of conditions. This way, they supply the body with a range of benefits, all in one. The Chinese and the ayurvedic healers have what we call the “super herbs” and to me, there must be something special about them.

Well, one of the herbs is called ashwagandha. It is rated one of the top 3 herbs within ayurvedic medicine. This one herb supplies so many benefits to so many of our Endo symptoms.

Here are the benefits and why I thought I better share:

1. Stress relief

Who knows why but for some reason, when one has Endo, stress seems to be in close proximity. I personally think it has to do with the hormones creating havoc in our thoughts, making us anxious and panicky! Well, what I am realizing is that stress is a precursor to ALL hormones. That means, if we get stressed, it affects all our hormones, including the thyroid, progesterone levels, estrogen levels etc. It is like a domino effect of hormones. The adrenal hormones are the first domino and if that is out of balance, all the rest will be too.

What ashwagandha does is regulate the stress and anxiety in our bodies, which will then contribute to all our other hormones working better. This means our progesterone will regulate better. Our thyroid function will work better and our prostaglandins will work better. It is said that ashwagandha will reduce anxiety, irritability and edginess for 90% of women within 4 weeks of using it. Wouldn’t our partners love us so much more without this reaction?

Stress also makes us look older, so it keeps you younger too!

2. Lose weight

Hormones control our fat levels. Since ashwagandha reduces the cortisol levels in our bodies, this will automatically reduce fat in our bellies. It has been shown to reduce belly fat within 2 months of using it.

Excess weight with Endometriosis is never a good thing. It creates “havens” for fat storage. Xenoestrogens like living in fat cells, so if we can lose weight, it will greatly reduce the excess xenoestrogens in our bodies.

3. Regulates and stimulates the thyroid

Since our thyoid is also regulated by hormones, it will aid in ensuring the thyroid works effectively. Don’t take with any thryoid drugs to avoid any clashes.

Thyroid function and side effects from hypothyroidism can greatly affect how we feel and there is some indication that it could be directly linked to Endometriosis forming in our bodies.

4. Boost libido and stamina

This is well known in India and will help with low libido and low sperm count. It is not estrogenic either!

One of the indicators with Endometriosis is that we suffer from estrogen dominance. One of the side effects is low libido and a disinterest in sex.

5. Support the immune system

Clinical studies have shown that ashwagandha extract can increase white blood cell counts! This is great for our immune function and fighting off Endometriosis!

Endometriosis has been directly linked to a poor immune function, according to the Gherson Institute. We can support the immune function with heaps of amazing herbs and supplements and not just food.

6. Anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor

These are my favorite words for Endo! This relates to the prostaglandins (hormone-like substances), which will be balanced from the domino effect explained earlier. Ashwagandha also reduces inflammation in joints, like arthritis.

I know I have experienced sore muscles and joints for years. I always thought it was stress-related. Hopefully, this will help!

7. Helps you sleep better

Who doesn’t want that with Endo? Better sleep and more energy all in one! This is an adaptogenic herb, which means it supplies the body with what it needs. It adapts as you need it.

Sleep is hugely important for healing to take place.

8. Helps with weakness and healing

If you have just had the laparoscopy and need to recover, this herb is perfect. It will give you energy and stamina to get you healing faster.

9. Helps with cystitis or similar conditions

Reduces inflammation, natural diuretic and promotes healing. This is so great for endo women as we often suffer from IC and frequent bladder infections.

10. Reduces depression and mental anxiety

Stress causes so many reactions and depression is one of them. We just feel like we can’t cope and this helpless feeling just takes over. I have been there too!

Ashwagandha will reduce stress and calm us down. Get back some perspective and see things more clearly.

This is one amazing herb and I have already started using it. If you are keen to try it, please order it through this link:

Ashwagandha is a herb typically recommended for times when you feel stressed or need support.
It can certainly help during these times and should only be used short-term. There are very few studies on how it might increase testosterone and these tend to be studies on men who perhaps are low on testosterone and there are many other factors which could play a part here. However, it is probably best for you to avoid it, since you have higher than normal testosterone.
I would explore your diet and particularly how much “white” food you are eating. Are you consuming large amounts of bread, grains, pasta etc? These could explain the high fasting insulin.
It might be a case of digging deeper than supplements Bri. I found that they can only resolve so much and without a base of diet and other lifestyle changes, we are just addressing symptoms, rather than the true triggers. I hope that helps 🙂

Hi, I have complex ovarian cyst, fibroids, and endo. I have very high DHEA-S levels and also higher than normal testosterone as well as very high fasting insulin (but normal sugar). I bought ashwagandha awhile back, but have been afraid to take it because I read it will increase testosterone levels. Is this true? Cause that is something I definitely don’t want. Please let me know. Also will it interfere with vitex?

    Hi Mojdeh,
I doubt it. It is an adaptogenic so it adjusts to your needs. I take those too and haven’t found any ill reaction so far 🙂

    Hi Melissa,

Thanks for sharing this 🙂 I was just wondering if you know whether Ashwagandha can interact with Macca or Indole-3-carbinol? I wouldn’t think so but thought to double-check before I start taking it.

    Cheers,

I can’t imagine it would but if you are concerned maybe check with your doctor.

    Melissa,
I am on birth control which is agreeing with me very well. Would this herb interfere with the birth control I am on?

    Thanks,
    Julie

  8. If you suffer from a severe Auto Immune condition like Lupus, then perhaps it is not a good idea. Check with your doctor first or take it slow and gauge your body and see how you feel. We are all different and unfortuantely not everything works for everyone.

ive been reading a bit about this – sounds pretty good, but… alot of the sites ive come across say its not recommended to those with auto immune disorders. what are your thoughts?

    Hi Sameera,
I get the info from other sources who seem to pick out the best herbs from each culture. Ayurvedic Medicine can be quite complex, so hence I why I thought I would pick more “generally feel good” stuff so it doesn’t counter act with anyone 🙂 This one seems perfect for us!

    I’m going to try this.
I was diagnosed with endo four years ago. i have stage 4. i have been seeing a naturopath. She did several tests on me and i found out that i also have hypothyroid and a weak liver. I know that you have mentioned weak liver and thyroid as a link to endo.i also have large endometriomas that cause alot of pain. This causes alot of depression for me because I don’t want another laparscopy. I want to get to the root of this problem and heal it. I am new to natural healing. Any info that can be shared with me would be really appreciated!
